Free Basic Electricity in Tshwane: Application and Meter Checks

Find the official FBE application route for Tshwane, prepare supporting records, confirm the meter link and ask about collection and renewal.

A modest South African household, prepaid meter and blank application folder with a subtle mint support symbol. Different balanced scene for tshwane household support; no municipal logos.

For Free Basic Electricity in Tshwane / Pretoria, confirm household eligibility through the responsible municipality, then check that the correct electricity account or meter is linked. Application, approval and collection are separate stages. SIMcloud does not approve these applications or issue free tokens through this guide.

Official sources reviewed 1 November 2026. An older policy or expired campaign is identified below. The authority's current form and assessment control eligibility; this page does not collect identity or income documents.

Official starting point for Tshwane / Pretoria

Start with the City's indigent-registration guide and the Community and Social Development Services process. The guide separates eligibility, documents and assistance. Registration is a household and services-account assessment, not a command entered on a keypad.

Use the municipality's current form and ask the assisting official to confirm any changes to the policy, allocation and registration points. The online guide is a starting checklist; it does not establish that your household has already been entered on the indigent register.

What to confirm before applying

The guide describes conditions involving residence, account/property status, citizenship and age or authorised exceptions. It also recognises specified municipal tenants and some other housing arrangements. If the account is not in the applicant's name or the property has a special arrangement, ask which evidence and route apply before applying.

Its checklist includes identity documents, the municipal account, income evidence or an unemployment affidavit, and supporting household records where applicable. It identifies a signed SARS-consent document as part of the application. Ask for the complete current checklist rather than omitting a required consent because a shorter online summary did not mention it.

Submit through the authority's current process

Ask the City official assisting indigent applications where the completed form and supporting documents must be lodged for your region. Record the application reference, whether verification remains outstanding and the period of approval. Request the current electricity allocation in kWh and how your particular supplier/meter receives it; do not infer the amount from an unrelated city or a power-rating figure.

Keep the application reference, approval period and full meter number privately. Ask whether registration is active, the meter is linked, the benefit has been processed for the current month and whether it has already been collected. A token from a previous occupant or an old account can point to the wrong record.

If you were approved but cannot see the benefit, ask which organisation owns the correction and obtain a case reference. Another collection code cannot repair an unapproved application or a wrong meter link. Use the FBE collection guide for that separate stage.

Budget for electricity above the benefit

Use the household energy budget to compare expected use with the allocation. Paid purchases still follow the assigned tariff and account deductions. The tariff hub explains that distinction and identifies which rates are calculator-supported.

If a paid token is missing, recover it through the seller's purchase history rather than treating a payment problem as a new FBE application. Do not share full tokens or identity documents in public comments.

Questions about this application

Does buying electricity register me?

No. A paid purchase, a meter check and an indigent-support application are different actions.

What if the meter is managed privately?

Ask the municipality and meter administrator how support is linked to the household under that arrangement. Do not assume a direct municipal collection process applies unchanged.

Where can I compare other areas?

The national FBE hub links the local routes and explains eligibility versus collection.

Put this guide into practice

Check the meter before a paid purchase

Municipal FBE approval is separate from a paid top-up. SIMcloud does not register households for FBE.
