Start an airtime, data or electricity business by choosing the commercial model, confirming the supplier's actual terms and designing a reliable sale-and-reconciliation process. Selling digital value is not automatically profitable because it is popular or can be delivered instantly. Work out what you earn on a completed sale after all costs.

This guide separates a shop/reseller operation, a business referral arrangement and a custom distribution platform. They use different prices, responsibilities and income rules. SIMcloud's existing affiliate programme is one defined referral option; it is not a blanket wholesale discount or a guarantee of income from every product.

Choose the model before choosing software

ModelHow income may ariseWhat to confirm
Shop or direct resellerAgreed resale margin or authorised service feeSupply price, selling rules, payment costs and customer-support responsibility
Affiliate referralCommission under the published referral termsQualifying products, tracking, completion rules and payout threshold
Distributor site or API platformAgreed commercial model for downstream salesWritten terms, branding, account boundaries, support and settlement

Do not assume one registration activates all three arrangements. Ask which model the supplier supports for your intended customer and sales channel. A branded site or API connection does not establish an agreed markup, exclusive territory or licence to make claims on the supplier's behalf.

Calculate contribution per completed sale

For a resale scenario, subtract the supplier cost, payment fee and other sale-specific costs from the amount collected. Then compare the remaining contribution with monthly overheads. Keep income assumptions separate from the wallet balance used to fund customer orders.

As a hypothetical example, a R100 sale with R98 supplier cost and R0.50 variable payment/handling cost contributes R1.50 before fixed costs and tax treatment. One mistaken or unreconciled transaction can consume many such contributions. This is arithmetic, not a SIMcloud quote.

The reseller economics guide explains margin versus markup, break-even and cash-flow scenarios. Obtain your actual price list and terms before treating a projected percentage as income.

Confirm products, pricing and support

  • Which airtime networks, data products and electricity meters are supported?
  • What is the actual supply price, and what fees apply to funding, payments or operations?
  • May you resell through the proposed channel, and how must any customer fee be disclosed?
  • What confirms success, what remains pending and who handles reversals or disputes?
  • How are statements, transaction references and customer receipts obtained?
  • What are the supported service hours and escalation routes?

For data, compare allowance, validity and intended applications. Buying many bundles does not automatically mean a discount. For electricity, check the meter and vending result: a payment accepted by your shop is not proof that a token was issued.

A repeatable counter-sale workflow

  1. Confirm the customer, recipient number or complete meter number and requested product.
  2. Show the total price and any separately authorised charge before payment.
  3. Record the sale under a unique internal reference.
  4. Submit the order once and retain the supplier reference.
  5. Check the final status before issuing a success receipt or retrying.
  6. Deliver the token or confirmation privately to the intended customer.
  7. Reconcile customer money, supplier value and unresolved items daily.

If an order is uncertain, query its existing reference before sending another. A retry is a new financial action unless the supplier's documented process says otherwise. Keep pending items on a reconciliation list with an owner and next action rather than treating them as failed by default.

The electricity counter guide covers missing tokens and wrong-meter questions. The bulk data guide covers catalogue compatibility and recipient checking.

SIMcloud's affiliate option

The approved affiliate page describes referrals of businesses. The terms specify 1% of qualifying airtime, data and bulk SMS turnover from referred businesses using the unique affiliate link, with commission on successful completed transactions and monthly payment in arrears.

The published minimum payout threshold is R1,000; balances below it roll over under the terms. Do not confuse an earned commission balance with cash already paid out. Electricity commission is not promised by this guide because the qualifying-product clause names airtime, data and bulk SMS. Read the current terms before participating.

Referral income is different from buying a R100 product at a discount and selling it at face value. Use the model's own agreement and records. Joining a referral programme does not remove the need to explain your role accurately to customers.

Distributor sites and integrations

If you want a branded distribution site or downstream customer platform, discuss the commercial and operational arrangement with SIMcloud first. Confirm who holds customer funds, sets prices, handles account access and supports disputed orders. The existence of distributor-site support in the platform is not an offer of automatic provisioning on unspecified terms.

For development planning, read the airtime distribution API guide and data distribution guide. Add an integration when it solves a measured operational need; first establish a correct manual sale and reconciliation process.

Records, registration and a controlled start

Keep business funds and personal spending distinguishable. Record completed sales, supplier costs, fees, refunds, outstanding customer claims and wallet movements. Avoid keeping passwords, OTPs or unnecessary identity documents in a sales spreadsheet.

Use CIPC for relevant entity-registration information and SARS small-business guidance for current tax and record-keeping requirements. The appropriate treatment depends on the business structure and transactions; this guide does not assign a universal registration or tax outcome.

Begin with a bounded pilot: known products, documented terms, manageable funded value and a daily close. Measure contribution, failed/pending orders and support effort before adding more products or increasing volume. Repeat purchases and accurate fulfilment are more useful evidence than gross turnover alone.

Reselling business questions

How much can I make?

Use the actual commercial agreement, completed volume and full costs. No universal vendor margin or guaranteed monthly income is asserted.

Does bulk buying guarantee a lower price?

No. Bulk can describe an ordering workflow. Confirm the price and permitted resale terms separately.

Can an affiliate earn on every electricity sale?

This guide makes no such promise. The current published qualifying-product clause names airtime, data and bulk SMS; check the agreement for your intended arrangement.
