064 cannot safely be assigned to one current network. The checked provider reference contains MTN, Cell C and Vodacom subranges. Its entries do not cover every fourth digit, and number portability adds another reason to check the full number before buying a network-specific product.
Need the network now? Use the full-number lookup. The prefix hub covers the other mobile prefixes, service numbers and landline area codes.
064 subranges and the gaps in the reference
| Starts with | Checked provider label | What this establishes |
|---|---|---|
| 0640 | MTN | A listed reference association |
| 0641, 0642, 0643, 0644, 0645 | Cell C | A listed reference association |
| 0646, 0647 | Unverified in this source | No operator inferred for the missing entries |
| 0648, 0649 | Vodacom | A listed reference association |

The gap matters. It would be easy to extend a neighbouring entry across 0646 and 0647 to make the table look complete. This edition does not do that. An absent entry in the checked reference is different from an unallocated number, a disconnected SIM or a claim that no provider can serve it.
Most common does not necessarily mean most numbers
In SIMcloud's published lookup sample, Vodacom was the largest observed group for 064 at 48.7%. That is below half. Describing it as a majority would be wrong, and choosing Vodacom for every 064 recipient would ignore the rest of the observations.
The figure is for the entire three-digit prefix. It cannot establish the network of a particular 0642 or 0648 number. Nor can it fill the unverified 0646–0647 entries in the provider table. The sample and the table answer different questions, so neither should be used to silently repair the other.
See the hub methodology for the observation window and limitations. The extract deduplicates repeat checks and publishes percentages without disclosing sample counts or activity totals.
Check the whole 064 number
- Confirm the intended recipient and full local-format mobile number.
- Use the network lookup tool, rather than a three-digit guess.
- Read the returned network and any validation message.
- Confirm product eligibility before placing a paid order.
If the lookup disagrees with an old contact list, keep the new result and its date attached to the number while resolving the difference. A contact's number can stay unchanged after porting. The lookup guide explains input formatting, captcha and missing-result troubleshooting.
A practical example for a recharge list
Imagine a list with several 064 numbers used by different colleagues. Labelling the entire prefix “Cell C” saves one column lookup but creates a purchase decision from incomplete evidence. Treating the largest sample group as the answer for everyone has the same problem.
Instead, validate each complete number and store its reported network separately. Recheck uncertainty before retrying a failed purchase. Do not replace an unresolved outcome with a second order just because you have changed the selected network.
Once the network is confirmed, compare suitable products using the dynamic data-price guide. Validity, usable allowance and retail-SIM restrictions remain relevant even after the network question is answered.
064 questions
Is 064 Cell C?
Some listed subranges use the Cell C label, but the checked reference also contains MTN and Vodacom entries. It is not an exclusive current-network answer for the whole prefix.
What network is 0646?
This edition does not verify its provider-reference assignment. Check the complete number's current network instead of treating a source gap as proof of an operator.
Does 48.7% mean the rest have ported?
No. That figure describes a self-selected lookup sample. It is not a porting-rate calculation or a national survey.
