071 Network in South Africa: MTN or Vodacom?

The fourth digit matters: the checked reference splits 071 between MTN and Vodacom, while portability makes a current lookup essential.

071 is not exclusive to one current South African network. The provider reference checked for this guide lists 0710 and 0717–0719 under MTN, and 0711–0716 under Vodacom. A number may also have ported. Check the full number before buying airtime or data.

0710 to 0719: why the fourth digit changes the reference

Consider two masked entries: 0710 xxx xxx and 0711 xxx xxx. A spreadsheet rule using only 071 puts both in the same bucket. The checked four-digit reference distinguishes them. That is why a single answer such as “071 is Vodacom” is incomplete even before considering portability.

What SIMcloud observed for 071

In the published lookup extract, Vodacom was the most-observed network for 071 at 57.0%. This is a description of the sample, not a guarantee for your number. A majority result for the broad prefix does not resolve the 0710 versus 0711 distinction.

The extract keeps the latest successful recorded result per number within its reporting window. It is self-selected and depends on the responses recorded by the tool. The hub explains the period and methodological limits. We keep sample counts and activity totals private.

Do not call the remainder a porting rate. Both different original subranges and later moves can contribute to a mixed result. Calculating a porting rate would need evidence of each number's original assignment and subsequent status, rather than a comparison with the most common network in a three-digit bucket.

How to check the current network of an 071 number

  1. Obtain the complete intended number from the recipient or a reliable record.
  2. Use the SIMcloud Network Confirmation Tool and follow the requested local format.
  3. Complete the required form fields and captcha.
  4. Use the returned network when reviewing a compatible recharge product.
  5. If the result is missing or unclear, resolve that uncertainty before purchasing.

Changing a phone's saved contact name does not establish its network. Nor does an old recharge receipt necessarily tell you where the number is today. If a result differs from your old list, check the record rather than forcing the new answer to agree with the prefix rule.

Buying for an 071 number without guessing

For a single purchase, check the full recipient number and selected network together. For a mixed staff list, do not automatically select Vodacom for every 071 row. A well-organised source list should keep the actual number and last-confirmed network as separate values.

For data, also check the product's validity and eligibility. The live data-price guide compares listed allowances and rand per GB, while preserving bundle restrictions. A correct network result is useful, but it does not make every bundle compatible with every retail SIM.

071 questions

Is 071 MTN or Vodacom?

Both appear in the checked provider reference, in different four-digit subranges. A full-number lookup is needed for the current network.

Is 0711 definitely Vodacom?

That is the association in the reference used here, not a permanent guarantee. Portability means the digits can stay the same while the serving network changes.

Can I identify the caller from 071?

No. The prefix does not identify the subscriber or prove who made a call. The lookup supplies network information, not an owner name or location.
