To buy prepaid electricity through SIMcloud, first confirm that the meter is supported, create or sign in to your account, make sure your wallet can cover the purchase, and then submit the meter number, amount, reference and recipient mobile number. SIMcloud sends you to Electricity History after submission so you can follow the order and open the voucher details when the municipality has returned the token.
Quick answer: open the SIMcloud prepaid electricity page, check the meter, register or sign in, fund your wallet, choose Electricity → Buy Electricity, complete the four fields and review the result in Electricity History.
What you need before you start
Prepare the following information before placing the order:
- The prepaid electricity meter number exactly as it appears on the meter card, previous token slip or property record.
- A South African mobile number for the person who should receive or manage the token.
- A meaningful reference such as
Shop 4 July electricityorHome meter. - A funded SIMcloud wallet with enough available balance to cover the full billed amount.
- Access to the meter or to the person who will enter the returned PIN or PINs.
The current SIMcloud web form accepts an amount from R55 to R1,000 per single electricity purchase. The history screen separates the electricity value, service fee and total billed amount so the purchase can be reconciled properly.
Check the number carefully. A successful prepaid electricity purchase is tied to the submitted meter. Do not guess the number or copy it from an unverified message.
Step 1: check whether the meter is supported
Checking first prevents you from funding an account for a meter that cannot be confirmed by the supplier. SIMcloud provides a public meter check on the Prepaid Electricity page.
- Enter your name, email address and South African cell number.
- Enter the meter number without spaces, hyphens or punctuation unless those characters are genuinely part of the identifier. The public form accepts letters and numbers.
- Select Check Meter.
- Read the result. A confirmed result says We support this meter and may also show the provider.
If SIMcloud cannot validate the meter, do not place a speculative order. Recheck the number against the meter card or previous token. If the number is correct, use the support option on the electricity page and provide the municipality or private utility name.
Step 2: buy electricity in SIMcloud
Once the meter is confirmed, create a free SIMcloud account or sign in. Fund the wallet before placing the order; the purchase form shows your last known balance.
- Open Buy Electricity. From the logged-in menu, choose Electricity and then Buy Electricity.
- Enter the meter number. Use the same checked meter number. Avoid leading or trailing spaces when copying it.
- Enter the total amount. Use a value from R55 to R1,000. SIMcloud calculates the electricity portion and service fee from the amount.
- Add a reference. Use a description that will still make sense in reports later. A property name, unit, branch or cost-centre reference is better than
electricity. - Enter the recipient cell number. SIMcloud accepts an ordinary South African format such as
0821234567and normalises it for processing. - Review all four values. Check the meter and amount a second time. Confirm that the recipient can access the token.
- Select Purchase Electricity once. Do not refresh or submit repeatedly while waiting for the supplier response.
If the wallet does not cover the billed amount, SIMcloud stops before sending the order and shows the required amount and available balance. Top up the wallet, wait for the balance to reflect, and submit again only after confirming the earlier attempt did not create an order.
What happens after you place the order
SIMcloud redirects you to Electricity Purchase History. Municipality and supplier responses are not always immediate, so allow roughly 30 seconds before expecting the voucher details.
The history table shows:
- Meter number.
- Total amount billed.
- Electricity value and service fee.
- Your order reference.
- The person on the business account who placed it, where applicable.
- Processing status and purchase date.
When the order is ready, choose View Voucher Details. The details page shows the meter, recipient, utility, status and recharge PIN information. Some meters may return key-change PINs as well as the purchase PIN. If SIMcloud displays a key-change warning, enter those PINs in the displayed order before the purchase or free-units PIN.
After a successful purchase, the meter also appears under My Electricity Meters. You can give it a recognisable name, buy again, open its statistics or create a recurring purchase.
Common problems and the safest response
| Message or situation | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| All fields are required. | At least one purchase field was empty. | Complete the meter, amount, reference and recipient. |
| Invalid recipient mobile number. | The recipient could not be normalised to a South African mobile number. | Use a valid format such as 0821234567 or 27821234567. |
| Amount must be between R55 and R1000. | The value is outside the current single-purchase limit. | Choose a value inside the displayed range. |
| Insufficient balance. | The wallet cannot cover the full billed amount. | Top up and wait for the available balance to update. |
| Voucher details are not available yet. | The order exists but the final municipal response has not arrived. | Wait a few moments and reopen the voucher. Do not automatically buy again. |
| The token is rejected by the meter. | The wrong meter, entry order or key-change sequence may be involved. | Compare the meter number and enter all PINs exactly in the order shown. Contact the utility or SIMcloud support if it still fails. |
